The German Centre for Research and Innovation (DWIH) in São Paulo is hosting the conference “Science Communication in Transition: Strategies, Responsibilities, and Emerging Challenges in Germany and Brazil” on October 26 and 27. The event, which will take place at the Goethe-Institut São Paulo, will bring together researchers and experts from the fields of science communication, journalism, and academia.

This year, science communication is a key focus of the DWIH São Paulo’s work, as part of the annual theme “Science for Society.” The event takes as its starting point the profound transformation of science communication, driven by digital platforms, artificial intelligence, social polarization, and disinformation. This scenario poses new challenges for researchers and scientific institutions, as well as for the exchange of knowledge and dialogue with a wide variety of social groups.

The goal of the conference is to use panels and interactive formats to shed light on the structures, functions, and challenges of science communication in Brazil and Germany, to promote mutual exchange, and to provide new impetus for dialogue, social participation, and public trust. The UA Ruhr is also participating in the event: Tobias Kreutzer, a researcher in the field of science communication and science journalism at TU Dortmund University, has been assigned as one of the moderators. He is a member of the Rhine-Ruhr Center for Science Communication Research, an interdisciplinary research center funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. In his research, he examines the epistemic and institutional cultures of various academic disciplines and their influence on the research and practice of science communication. His other research interests include the philosophy of science, science communication in popular culture, and critical social theory.

Presentations will be simultaneously interpreted from German into Portuguese and vice versa. Parts of the program and the interactive sessions will take place in English without interpretation. Participation in the event is free of charge, and no online broadcast is planned. The registration deadline is October 21.
