TU Dortmund University: Professorship (Open Rank: W3 or W2) “AI in Higher Education” in the Department of Computer Science

Profile of the professorship
In its research, the professorship represents the field of artificial intelligence within higher education, with a focus on AI-supported teaching and learning approaches for use in STEM subjects, incorporating large language models, and advances this field at the international cutting edge. A particular focus is on the development and empirical investigation of adaptive AI-supported learning environments for students. Possible research directions include (selection, not exhaustive):
- Models and methods for the individual real-time analysis of learning processes and progress
- AI-supported and data-driven tools for the adaptive adjustment and support of students
- lndividualised analysis of student interaction with AI tools
- Real-time feedback mechanisms that promote learning and motivation
- lssues of fairness, transparency, and effectiveness of Al in educational contexts
- lnvestigation of AI-supported learning processes in digital and immersive learning environments
In the research, ethical issues in the use of Al are taken into account, also in regard to bias. The professorship ensures the transferability of its methods to other disciplines beyond the STEM field. Furthermore, it participates in research networks and collaborations at TU Dortmund University (e.g., didactics in STEM disciplines, educational sciences, rehabilitation sciences, or university didactics) and beyond (e.g., the Center for Advanced Internet Studies or the University Alliance Ruhr). The professorship is committed to supporting early-career researchers and contributes appropriately to teaching at the Department of Computer Science.
Your qualifications
You have earned a doctoral degree with above-average distinction, have completed your post-doctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation), or have achieved equivalent qualifications. You demonstrate research excellence in the professorship's research area through a consistent record of high-quality, relevant international publications in recognized peer-reviewed journals, particularly in recent years. You are also integrated into international research networks and have experience in securing third-party funding. For the W3 university professorship, a high Level of international visibility of research, particularly in the last five years, is also expected. Likewise, applicants for the W3 university professorship must already demonstrate success in independently securing competitive third-party funding, including collaborative joint projects. All applicants possess the potential for outstanding teaching performance and, ideally, relevant experience in university teaching. Experience in the development and testing of innovative teaching and learning methods is also desirable. Social and leadership skills, along with a willingness to participate in academic self-governance, complete your profile.
