The GROW programme – Global Research Opportunities for the South – is the DAAD’s latest funding initiative aimed at strengthening international scientific cooperation and advancing research in countries of the Global South. GROW funds research stays of two to six months in Germany, as well as preparatory trips of one to two months to establish contacts and foster academic cooperation. The application deadline is 30 April 2026 (for stays between August 2026 and the end of January 2027).

The programme is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encouraging projects that make a concrete contribution to global challenges in areas such as health, education, climate and governance.

Applications are open to doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, university professors and established academics and scientists from countries on the OECD DAC list — primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa, but also in Latin America and Asia, who are employed at a university or a research institute. Women, socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals and persons from disadvantaged regions or groups are especially encouraged to apply.

GROW values what comes after the stay and, for this reason, applicants are expected to provide a clear proposal for knowledge transfer and the application of results in their country of origin. Among the benefits provided are a monthly stipend of €1,400 for PhD and postdoctoral candidates or €2,000 to €2,150 for assistant professors and professors; health insurance; and a fixed allowance for travel expenses.

On 7 and 14 April at 5.00 pm, the DAAD Brazil team will be available on the Webex platform to answer questions from applicants to the GROW programme. Please access the online support service via this link. Further information about the meetings can be found here.
